Search engine optimization is set of steps that are taken before planning a website, during the development process and after website upload. It is actually done to get a site on top of search results as people don't browse to inner pages of the search results and most people change their search terms or exit after going through first 10-20 results. The ideal position for any search terms is first 5 results. Nobody could gurantee a top 5 ranking for a very competitive search term but few basic steps could make the site more visible in search engines.

If you have a website and you don't have enough budget for its promotion then following steps could make your site more visible if not in top 5 for most competitive keywords.

1. Content:-

First step before you should start writing content for your website is to select top 10 keywords for which you want good ranking with search engines. This keywords would be used in almost all the pages so as to make all the content pages depict a similar theme. Remember if the theme of the website is to sell eggs, your important keywords could be "egg", "eggs", "egg drop", "hard boiled eggs", "big green egg".... Now you take these keywords and write your content using all or most of these in all the pages in the site. That would create a theme for the website in the eyes of search engines that you sell eggs and your website has everything related to eggs and is right to be in top of search results.

Don't use a single word keyword but try to use a phrase consisting of 2-3 words. Don't go for most famous keywords but always go for keywords for which if users come to your website generates business for you.

2. Meta tags:-

Many search engines now don't give much weightage to the Meta tags other then title tag any more. But there are lot of them who still do give weight age to them, so why not do it properly. The various important Meta tags for rankings are:-

Title: Most Important
Keyword: Important
Descriptions: Partially important
Robots: Depends on preferences

Title: In recent times nearly all search engines are giving highest weightage to title tags. It is the most important factor for ranking a web page and in fact the text from title tags is used in displaying the results in the search engines.

Keywords: Most search engines ignore this tag due to heavy spam possibility. But for rest it should be done properly. Include the words used in your page in text which could be the search terms. Including a word in keyword tag and not using in the body of the page would do no good.

Description: This tag gives some control of how a search engine would show your url. Though google generally creates description from the body, but it is always advised to have it done well.

3. Url Submission:

Though this is not so important now for top search engines but it is advised to get your site url submitted to all the search engines specially if it is new. Search on the net and you would find 100's of tools which would take less time for submission with all the search engines.

4. Few ranking techniques.

Check your site ranking on alexa regularly as this would give you some idea of where you are in this web world. Now one of the most important factors is to get back links. Submit your site to as much directories as you can. Some of them would ask to have their link on your website but it is always advisable to get links from the directories which offer free links. Start with dmoz.

Try to get back links or exchange links by your friends or try to give mail to webmasters asking if the would be interested to exchange links with your site. There is no limit how much back links is enough so go on getting it as much as you can but remember that the links should be from a similar theme website.

5. Website Promotion

Other then the above also try some other means of promoting your website. Some of them are through free classifieds, ezine listings, signatures on forums and emails, ad swaps, write an article and publish it, write mails to all your friends and family members and request then to pass the email to everyone they know.
